上世纪80年代初期迟志强与当时的陈冲、刘晓庆、唐国强和潘虹等同是第二届“全国优秀青年演员”奖获得者。就在事业如日中天之时，1983年，迟志强在南京突然被捕入狱，随后被南京市检察机关以“流氓罪”批准逮捕，监禁4年。
由于表现良好，迟志强于1985年提前出狱。两年后，他根据铁窗内的生活创作、演唱的《钞票》《铁窗泪》、《愁啊愁》等歌曲风靡大江南北，人称“囚歌之王”。
