您好，个人认为 relation 和 relationship 的区别在于：
1）relation 作为（名词）用在人与人之间时，通常意味着有着（亲戚）关系，尤其是近亲，关系密切的，和 relative 作名词属于差不多的用意；也就是 relation 通常用在有（血缘关系）的联系；
2）relationship 作为（名词）时，其后缀 -ship 强调的是一种（状态），也就是（关系状态），这种状态可以是关系，往来，比如朋友之间的，远亲之间的，或是亲属关系，要比 relation 更宽些，也就是 relationship 即可以用在有（血缘关系）的联系，也可以用在（无血缘关系）的联系，而通常更习惯用于（无血缘关系）的联系状态上。比如男女朋友可以用 relationship 但不能用 relation。
所以：
1）What relation is he to you?（可能问的是他和你有何亲戚关系？）强调的是他和你在一起的（事实）为何，问的可能是他和你的（血缘）关联。
回答可能是：He is my cousin. / He is my distant relative.
2）What is his relationship to/with you?（可能问的是·他和你有何密切关系？）强调的是他和你在一起的（状态）为何，可能问的是他和你的（无血缘）的密切关系。
回答可能是：He is my best friend. / He is my neighbour. / He is my boyfriend.
比如：
1）They aren't married, but they have a pretty close relationship.
(他们没有结婚，但关系很密切。）这里不适用 relation。
2）They are not of the same family relationship.
(他们不属于同一血统。）这里不适用 relation。
所以可以把：
relation 看作是 friend（强调的是朋友的事实。）
relationship 看作是 friendship（强调的是朋友之间的友谊。）
