音乐剧《猫》的剧本取材于英国诗人托马斯.斯特尔斯.艾略特(Thomas Sterns Eliot)的诗集《Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats》，这首诗作是艾略特为儿童创作的，所以诗句比他的其他诗作都要简单易懂得多。诗作完成于1939年10月，而音乐剧《猫》的创作却开始于1977年，两者相差了38年。 著名音乐剧作曲大师安德鲁.劳伊德.韦伯(Andrew Lloyd Webber)于1977年开始着手为《Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats》编配音乐，这 是源于 Webber 小时候读过这首诗而产生了浓厚兴趣。一开始 Webber 只打算写一些在舞台上演出的散曲，完全没有创作音乐剧的念头。因为这首诗没有戏剧情节，更没有戏剧张力，不具备创作为音乐剧的条件。 他为这首诗写了好多片段，时常在聚会上用钢琴弹给朋友听。在1980年的爱德蒙顿音乐节(Edmonton Festival)上，Webber 公演了他写好的几个片段。当时艾略特的遗孀瓦莱里.艾略特(Valerie Eliot)也参加了音乐节，并且带给 Webber 许多艾略特没有发表的诗和故事。这些诗里，就包括了后来十分出名的《魅力猫 - Grizabella》，艾略特因为觉得这首诗对孩子来说太悲伤；而没有把这首已经完成的诗放进诗作里。但就是这首诗，却给 Webber 带来了音乐剧的灵感，他感到《魅力猫 - Grizabella》的遭遇正是故事的主题所在，如果加入进去，就可以构成一部有头有尾的音乐剧了。 经过几年不断努力，《猫》正式登场，于1981年5月11日在新伦敦剧院首演。 CATS
