Beetles - 《Yesterday》
《Yesterday》是甲壳虫乐队演唱的代表作品之一，于1965年9月25日发行这首单曲时就荣登英美两国的排行榜首，并获英国Ivor Novello奖。从1965年至1972年间有大约一千多位歌手演唱或翻唱过这首歌，这或许是世界上翻唱次数最多的歌曲。

大概是1965年初的一天早上，Paul一觉醒来，耳边回响着一首曲子。他在钢琴前把旋律弹出来。这是一首完整的曲子。Paul说，他不敢相信自己会如此简单地梦见一首歌。这一定是自己以前在什么地方听过的老歌。他向很多人询问这首曲子的来历，没有人知道。
确信这是自己的作品后，Paul开始试图填入歌词。一开始，进展并不顺利。他知道第一句需要三个音节，在没有什么灵感的时候，他把这首歌叫做“炒鸡蛋”：
Richard Lester回忆说，Paul在拍摄**Help!期间（1965年2月至5月）经常用拍摄现场的钢琴弹起这首“炒鸡蛋”，试图创作出完美的歌词。Lester最终不耐烦地警告Paul，如果他不赶紧写完这首歌，他就把钢琴撤走。
五月底，Paul和Jane一起到葡萄牙度假，住在吉他手Bruce Welch的别墅里。Welch回忆说，Paul经常借用他的吉他继续考虑“炒鸡蛋”的歌词。六月初，在度假即将结束时，他终于完成了“Yesterday”。
他把这首完整的作品带到John面前。John有点儿失望。几个月来，他们每次碰头讨论各自的作品时都要提起这首歌。John感到自己会想念“炒鸡蛋”这个固定笑话。
George Martin大约在听到这首歌的旋律时就告诉Paul，它不适合甲壳虫通常的配乐。Paul自己也觉得这不是甲壳虫风格的歌曲，有些犹豫不决。George Martin最后提议加入弦乐四重奏伴奏，由Paul主唱并演奏吉他，其他三个甲壳虫无需上场。这是甲壳虫录制的第一首“个人作品”。弦乐伴奏的乐谱是Martin写的。
Yesterday并不是甲壳虫第一次聘用乐师配乐。四个月前，甲壳虫在录制You've Got to Hide Your Love Away时便加入了长笛。这种为作品添加复杂配乐的习惯在“Sgt Pepper”专辑中达到了顶峰。使用古典乐常用的乐器为摇滚乐带来新的表现形式。
从主题上看，Yesterday和You've Got to Hide Your Love Away也有相似之处。两首歌都表达了失恋后的痛苦心情。特别是Yesterday中的“我还不及原来的一半”、以及“我需要一个躲藏的地方”和You've Got to Hide中的“感到自己只有两英尺高”、“你要把爱情藏起来”几乎如出一辙。
但Yesterday更强调失恋前后的反差，以及无忧无虑的“昨天”的怀念。歌手也许因为说了错话，导致情人离去。他绝望地渴望回到昨日，回到毫无阴影的过去。但忧伤的旋律告诉我们，昨日已一去不返。歌手相信昨日，但已不可能摆脱烦恼。
不算Beatles for Sale中那首不太认真的What You're Doing，Yesterday是Paul第一次创作悲哀的失恋歌曲。歌中的主人公不仅承认失去了爱人，而且承认自己完全无法理解这种现实，感到迷惘而不知所措。这是Paul会继续在歌曲里威胁甩掉女友，但在Yesterday之后，他开始不时表达出自己内心中脆弱的一面。他最动人的一些作品就是这种暴露自己弱点的歌曲。Yesterday标志着Paul的创作水平达到成熟。
Paul从前的女友Iris Caldwell回忆说，1963年两人分手时，Iris指责Paul冷酷无情。1965年，Paul打电话给她说，这首新歌将证明自己不但有感情，而且像其他人一样会心碎。
也许是感到这首歌不符合摇滚乐队的形象，甲壳虫解散前从未在英国把这首歌作为单曲发行。Capitol于1965年9月13日在美国推出这首单曲，B面是Act Naturally。歌曲占据排行榜首位4周。
